Delusions of Grandeur

Help Topics :: defy

.: Help for defy

Defy is your defence against words meant to wound. You refuse to
rise to it. The taunt lands on someone who will not be moved.

You do not type defy. Like dodge, parry and block, it happens on
its own when someone comes at you with words.

━━━ How It Works ━━━

Uses: Willpower and your Rhetoric skill
Costs: Defy spends Conviction, not Stamina
Answers: Taunts and other attacks on your composure

Your rhetoric skill lowers the price; carried load does
not affect this act of will. If you cannot pay in full, defy still answers the
taunt after spending what remains, but without Rhetoric skill. Only the defence
selected for the incoming effect is charged.

━━━ Degrees of Success ━━━

Defying is not all or nothing. Refuse a barb outright and it costs
you nothing. Only just hold your temper and it still stings, less
than it would have. Even a poor defiance is worth something. The narrated
response follows the actual degree of defence rather than a fixed line.

━━━ Improving It ━━━

Rhetoric: the skill that carries most of the weight
Willpower: improves through use, and raises every mental defence

Knowing how a barb is built is most of knowing how to shrug it off.
The same skill that lets you taunt lets you weather one.
